S220 Moulded Plywood Chair

The design of the S220 chair by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility takes inspiration from the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs. It is a stackable chair made of moulded plywood with a tubular steel frame. The chair has an ergonomic seat shell, with the option of adding armrests, and is available in a range of colours and woods. The design of the S220 pushes the limits of what is possible with moulded plywood, and its shape is both organic and precise. The moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive, with just the right amount of give thanks to the chair's elegant hourglass shape. The front edge of the seat shell is smoothly rounded, avoiding pressure points and making the chair more comfortable. This edge also picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame, creating a harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics, and functionality. The S220 chair is suitable for use in a variety of settings, from private homes to the contract sector.

S220F Moulded Plywood Chair

The established shape of the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs served as inspiration for the design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility: the S220F is a material-efficient, stackable moulded plywood chair with an ergonomic seat shell and a light tubular steel frame. Featuring optional armrests, the chair can be used in a variety of settings – from private homes to the contract sector – and is available in a range of different woods and colours. The chair’s design pushes the limits of what is technically possible using the material of moulded plywood, which has always been a driver of innovation at Thonet. The S220F has an understated organic form as well as precise lines, and its moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive. The chair’s elegant hourglass shape means that the seat shell has just the right amount of give. A smoothly rounded front edge perfectly embodies the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that is so characteristic of the S220F. This “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, makes the chair more comfortable and picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame.
