S35N Bauhaus Armchair

Among all the chairs from the Bauhaus era that utilised cantilever design, the armchair known as the S35 stood out for its lightweight structure, flexibility, and comfort. When it was first introduced in 1930, the modern lifestyle that it represented was considered visionary, and today it remains a symbol of our mobile and individual way of living. The S35 was designed by Marcel Breuer to incorporate all the functions of a cantilever tubular steel armchair within a single line that includes the armrests. Breuer's design achieved a double cantilever effect, allowing the seat and armrests to flex independently of each other. The cantilevered flexing movement of the seat and backrest frame towards the back is balanced by the flexing armrests. For those seeking extra comfort, a matching footstool is also available, which is designed as a cantilever piece of furniture. The comfortable club chair S 35 made its debut in 1930 as part of the furnishing of a prototype high-rise apartment, which Breuer collaborated on with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer. This iconic armchair has become an enduring symbol of the Bauhaus movement and modern design.

209 Bentwood Armchair

This beautiful chair is a true work of art in its design and manufacturing. The frame that serves as both the armrest and backrest is crafted by bending a single piece of solid beech wood. Following the model of the original bentwood chair, which consisted of six parts, this chair, known as no. 209, is also made of only six parts. The combination of the organic shape and minimalistic design gives it the appearance of a sculpture. It caught the attention of Swiss architect Le Corbusier, who used it in his buildings, such as the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart in 1927. Le Corbusier once remarked that this chair exudes a sense of nobility.

S220 Moulded Plywood Chair

The design of the S220 chair by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility takes inspiration from the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs. It is a stackable chair made of moulded plywood with a tubular steel frame. The chair has an ergonomic seat shell, with the option of adding armrests, and is available in a range of colours and woods. The design of the S220 pushes the limits of what is possible with moulded plywood, and its shape is both organic and precise. The moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive, with just the right amount of give thanks to the chair's elegant hourglass shape. The front edge of the seat shell is smoothly rounded, avoiding pressure points and making the chair more comfortable. This edge also picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame, creating a harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics, and functionality. The S220 chair is suitable for use in a variety of settings, from private homes to the contract sector.

S220F Moulded Plywood Chair

The established shape of the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs served as inspiration for the design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility: the S220F is a material-efficient, stackable moulded plywood chair with an ergonomic seat shell and a light tubular steel frame. Featuring optional armrests, the chair can be used in a variety of settings – from private homes to the contract sector – and is available in a range of different woods and colours. The chair’s design pushes the limits of what is technically possible using the material of moulded plywood, which has always been a driver of innovation at Thonet. The S220F has an understated organic form as well as precise lines, and its moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive. The chair’s elegant hourglass shape means that the seat shell has just the right amount of give. A smoothly rounded front edge perfectly embodies the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that is so characteristic of the S220F. This “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, makes the chair more comfortable and picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame.

404 Wooden Chair

A wooden chair range designed by Stefan Diez that draws inspiration from our bentwood legacy. However, the design has been modified with a focus on aesthetic and technological standards. The chair legs and armrests are bent and fused into a knot, which is then attached to the seat from below. The range offers both style and comfort, with a captivating interplay between the smoothly contoured wooden features and the eye-catching upholstery. The range does not limit users to a specific seating posture, and the ergonomically shaped backrest flexes to provide additional comfort.

S661 Moulded Plywood Chair

The S661 chair, a design that was first created by Günter Eberle in the 1950s and has won multiple awards. This versatile chair is perfect for a range of settings, including dining areas, kitchens, living rooms, home offices, restaurants, and waiting areas. Its moulded plywood seat shell showcases the natural beauty of the material, with options including elegant walnut, warm oak, or natural or stained beech. The tubular steel frame is available in both chrome-plated and powder-coated finishes. Despite its minimalist shape and use of materials, the chair's visible wood grain and soft curves give it a warm and welcoming look, making it a standout piece in any room. The S661 features precise contours and clear lines, with a combination of materials, such as moulded plywood and tubular steel.

204 PH Barstool

This classic barstool combines the use of beech wood and tubular steel. The legs of the stool are made through the traditional bending process of beech wood, while a tubular steel ring provides added stability and serves as a footrest for greater seating comfort. The round seat is offered in two versions: a smooth moulded seat or an upholstered one. Its sturdy wood and durable upholstery make it a dependable companion, ideal for both home and restaurant use.

This lounge chair plays with the balance between a protective shell and an inviting openness, providing a space for relaxation and tranquility. Its unique appearance is achieved through a contemporary take on the classic wing chair, with a shape that suggests an elegant cocoon that envelops the sitter, conveying a sense of safety. The comfortable upholstery, featuring a welcoming soft wave effect, is another striking feature. The inner cushioned core creates a striking contrast with the angularity of the outer shell. The chair's position can be individually adjusted thanks to a clever mechanism.
